Several out-of-state orienteers have contacted NMO about purchasing old maps to run on, and asked if NMO will have any winter orienteering events. Here is what we have going now.
Valle Grande. Rob Dixon, Recreation Manager at Valles Caldera National Preserve, welcomes NMO to hold a 2011 snow O in Valle Grande. Una Smith has proposed that NMO set previously approved courses for the entire season and sell course maps to VCNP so that VCNP can in turn sell the maps to VCNP visitors. VCNP cannot sell maps on behalf of NMO. Orienteers could then self-report to NMO their time on course and even their splits. Volunteers are needed to set and vet course(s), ideally this week. Please contact Una Smith to volunteer.
Valencia County. Jerry Boyd and Una Smith are working on a new sprint O map of Valencia High School, a very nice new campus located a few miles east of Los Lunas, south of Albuquerque. The first meet on this new map will be on March 12. The format will be short, fast sprints with map exchanges. Meet director is Una Smith; meet staff include Luis Aguirre, Scotty Wright, and Larry Zentner (Valley HS Air Force JROTC). Expected participants include JROTC groups and NM SAR leaders.
Los Alamos. Rudy Schwarz (St. Louis OC) will be in Santa Fe for 2 weeks (January 16-27) and would like to get in some training runs, assistant mapping or course setting, whatever. Rudy is an avid foot orienteer and bicycle rider, and he is traveling with a bicycle. He would like to get together with any NMO members for some rides or map runs, preferably in the Los Alamos area. A map run is simply following an old course map, with no course set in the terrain. The experience is like setting a course that has been completely pre-designed. Rudy's e-mail is firstname.lastname@example.org; he will be staying at the Santa Fe International Hostel and his cell number is 314-914-1120.
AttackPoint.org is having an interesting discussion about online registration for O meets, here: http://www.attackpoint.org/discussionthread.jsp/message_491204 . Several registration services already exist, that NMO could adopt. Have you used one of these, as event staff or competitor at other O clubs' events? Please send any feedback to Jerry Boyd (email@example.com, 505-821-4780), Mike Schacht (firstname.lastname@example.org), and Una Smith (email@example.com, 505 661-8132).
Please renew your NMO membership for 2011 now. Early renewal will improve the club's cash flow and cause less stress for its officers. The membership form is here: http://www.nm-orienteers.org/node/188 .
Judy and Dick Opsahl (California) will attend the annual big meet at Anzo Borrego Desert State Park near San Diego, January 15-18. The park is a hotspot for desert wildflowers, and this should be an especially good year.
Colm Connaughton (UK) is currently a member of Octavian Droobers OC. No it isn't a joke: http://www.octavian-droobers.org/ .
The NMO annual business meeting and lunch will be in Albuquerque on January 15 (Saturday) at 12 noon at Milly's Sandwich Shop. Milly's Sandwich Shop (7308 Jefferson Street NE, Albuquerque NM; 505-345-9200) is on the east side of Jefferson, south of Masthead St and north of Hawkins St. From I-25 exit onto Paseo del Norte westbound and go about 0.5 mile to Jefferson. Turn left onto Jefferson and go about 1 mile south. Milly's will be your left.
Course design workshop
The NMO course design workshop will be on January 15 (Saturday) 2-5pm, in Albuquerque. See the NMO website for details here: http://www.nm-orienteers.org/node/183 .
Happy New Year!
