To celebrate National Orienteering week, and a new orienteering map, New Mexico Orienteers are putting up a navigation challenge downtown Los Alamos Thursday Sept 15th, 2016.
Come and learn navigation skills, or have a fun run/walk checking out places downtown.
The format is sprint rogaine, which means that you'll pick your choice of checkpoints to visit within a 1 hour time frame.

News of New Mexico Orienteers, September 2015
New Mexico Orienteers is pleased to share with NMO members and friends alike this email from one of our neighboring Arizona O clubs, Greater Phoenix Orienteering Club, concerning orienteering near the New Mexico state line.
On Saturday, April 25, New Mexico Orienteers’ first meet of 2015 will be in Los Alamos at the PEEC Earth Day Festival, 10am to 2pm. Admission is free. Two fun courses (routes) are offered. Park in Los Alamos downtown and take a brief shuttle ride or walk to PEEC's new home at the Los Alamos Nature Center.
Short course: length 1.75 km with +120 feet of climb, white (novice) level of map reading skills, on sandy trails in the canyons below the new Los Alamos Nature Center.
New Mexico Orienteers will hold an open house in Los Alamos on Saturday, April 25, 2015 to celebrate opening of the brand new Los Alamos Nature Center. Fun orienteering courses are planned: short and long. Resembling an Ancestral Puebloan cliff house, the nature center has a stunning canyon rim view and trailhead. It is an amazing location for orienteering!

In Albuquerque, on the Open Space Summer Series program for Sunday, August 12, is a 2-3 hour class in basic orienteering skills provided by New Mexico Orienteers at The 66 On 66 (expanded from the Route 66 Open Space). NMO has been doing GIS and field cartography to prepare a new detailed map of this exciting new 66 acre open space and this class will be NMO's first event held on this new orienteering map.
Basic orienteering skills include the following:
* read the map legend
* orient the map to the terrain
* locate yourself on the map

NMO is co-hosting a meet on Saturday, October 1st with the NM Adventure Racing Club. The Orienteering meet will consist of White, Yellow, Orange and Green courses. There will also be a 4hr "Sport" Course Adventure Race entailing mountain biking, trekking and orienteering.
Meet Site is at the Oak Flats picnic area in the Cibola National Forest. Start times are from 10 am to 1 pm. (select "Read More" for more details)
Several out-of-state orienteers have contacted NMO about purchasing old maps to run on, and asked if NMO will have any winter orienteering events. Here is what we have going now.
